One of my favorite pictures

This was taken on Staalsy's second night here. There was still some uncertainity if he would be staying or not at this point.

Not a whole lot is going on today. I'm sick so I've spent most of the day in bed. Staalsy has spent most of the day in the closet because sometimes you have to channel your inner R. Kelly.

I believe the medicine makes him sleepy. I'm also pretty sure he's never really felt safe in his life so he's sleeping as much as he can to make up for that fact.

It's weird. I keep thinking about how I just happened to look out the window when I did and what would've happened if I didn't. He would've just left and would've continued to starve.

I've been emailing back & forth with the SPCA regarding the found cat report and this is one of the things they said today:
This guy is lucky to have found you. Sounds like he's getting
better care than he did wherever he was before.

I think I'm just as lucky.

  1. I agree with the SPCA. I live in Quebec and normally there is a specific day for everybody to move from one house to another, or one appartment to another. It's July first. In the neighborhood where I lived before, July first was "Abandon your cat day". Every year, in the back alley and streets you'd see cats being left behind by the families that didn't want them anymore. I think it's heartless to leave them outside like that. When you decide to care for a pet, it's for life.

Unfortunately, I lived in an appartment where only two cats were allowed and I had my two cats, so I couldn't adopt any of the ones that were abandonned. But every day I left water and food on my balcony where they had access and in the winter (Winter in Quebec can be harsh) I gave them access to a little shed on said balcony where they could at least hide from the bitter winds. I had a name for each of the cats that came every day. And it broke my heart when, sometimes, some of them stopped coming. Some would not let me pet them, and some would come and keep me companie when sometimes I read outside. When I moved, my roommate who stayed continued taking care of them.
Just wanted to let you know that you are doing a difference in this cat's life. And he will love you forever for it.

  2. I can't fathom ever abandoning any of my animals. If you don't want it anymore, at least take it somewhere where it'll get a chance at a new life/new family.

I'm glad that you & your old roommate took care of them. We once fed this huge tomcat that I named Wembley. One day he showed up with this little kitten. I have no idea where she came from or how she got there, but there she was. She wouldn't get close to anyone no matter how much Wembley tried to show her it was ok.
We were supposed to get this epic snow. At this point, I'd been trying to catch her for 3 months. I happened to lure her towards the door with my hoodie's string and blindly grabbed her.
The next day, we saw Wembley and he looked inside and saw the little kitten (We've named her Mokey). We never saw him again after that. I think it was his mission to make sure she would be well cared for. (We still have her, she's made great progress in the 4 years we have had her)

Thank you so much for the kind words. I know those cats you cared for also love you for all that you did for them.
